Use lightning conductors on all buildings: HC

Ranchi, Aug 23 (UNI) Jharkhand High Court today directed the state government to make compulsory provisions for lightning conductors on all government and non-government buildings of the G+4 category.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Muthuswamy Karpagavinayagam and Justice Narendra Nath Tiwary passed the order while hearing a writ petition of its own motion.

The state government should also make people aware of thunder and lightning through Radio, TV, newspaper and street dramas between February and June every year, the court ordered.

The court further directed the public relations department to conduct masive awareness programmes on lightning safety and precautions. The department would put hoardings at appropriate places in towns and villages, the court maintained.

Human Resources Department would ensure distribution of pamphlets and literature, prepared by the court's committee, among the school children throughout the state, it court added.

The court appreciated efforts made by Birsa Agricultural University, Birla Institute of Technology and teams of other scientists in scientifically reviewing the lightning problem and providing technical assitance to the court.

Earlier, the court had directed VP Singh Amicus Curie appointed by to form a committee which would discuss the prevention of loss of human life and property caused by thunder and lightning.

The court had taken suo moto action and converted the matter into a pulic interest litigation when the court was informed by lawyers about the loss so many lives including those of children due to lightning.
