Two killed and one rebel held in Assam

Guwahati, Aug 23 (UNI) A school headmaster and a Dimasa militant were killed and an adivasi rebel was arrested in separate incidents in Assam today.

A local high school headmaster was shot dead in front of his school building near the headquarters town of Haflong in North Cachar Hills district at about 1130 hours.

Police said Mannan Hussain, the headmaster of Dibarai High School, was called out of the school, situated about one km from the Haflong police station, by some unknown persons. They shot him on the forehead, killing him on the spot.

Family sources failed to confirm any possible cause of the killing. Police suspect insurgents to be behind it, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

In another incident at about the same time, a militant of the pro-talks Dima Halom Daogah (DHD) Nunisa faction was killed in cross firing with cadres of the anti-talks Jewel faction of the group.

The firing between the two rival factions of the DHD took place near Umrangso in NC Hills district.

Meanwhile, an All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA) cadre was arrested from Gossaigaon area in Kokrajhar district late last night.

The militant has been identified as Soha Baski and was handed over to the local police by the Army, who had picked him up.

One revolver, three Chinese grenade, four detonators and two IED circuits were recovered from him.
