Bhopal, Aug 23 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar disclosed, on his 84th birthday today, that he once resorted to ''smuggling.'' ''While on a visit to the United States, I was served delicious black grapes on board a plane. They were so tasty that I asked the air hostess about their origin. She replied that they were of the Flame sub-species cultivated in California,'' he said in a chat with journalists at Raj Bhavan.

At that juncture, Dr Jakhar decided to bring a cutting to India.

Upon reaching San Francisco, the eminent agriculturist braved a downpour to undertake a three-hour journey by road to a relative's place and ultimately obtained the cutting and secretly brought it to India.

''The variety is now a bountiful crop over thousands of acres in Punjab,'' the Governor addded.
