K'taka: Proposal for Petrochem Complex cleared

Bangalore, Aug 23: Karnataka Cabinet today cleared the proposal to construct a Petro Chemical Complex near Mangalore involving an investment of Rs 3590 crore to create a job potential for over one million people.

Briefing newspersons after the cabinet meeting, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj S Horatti said the project, to be completed by 2026, was expected to come up in a 300 kilometer radius in dry land and less populated area.

Other states like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa too had submitted their proposals to the centre for similar project, he revealed saying that the state would be sending its proposal at the earliest.

He said the cabinet also decided to set up a four-member official committee to recommend to the government on formation of new taluks.

The committee was expected to submit its report within six months, he added.

He said the cabinet also approved construction of 'Suvarna Vidhana Soudha' in Belgaum involving Rs 230 crore. Construction work would begin within a week and the government would release Rs 70 crore during this year, he revealed.

He said the cabinet decided to increase intake of seats in various new medical, dental and other professional colleges from 2008-09.
