Govt strengthening IT infrastructure: CM

Chennai, Aug 23 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government is taking special efforts to strengthen the infrastructure in tier-II cities like Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Trichy and Tirunelveli to attract more IT investments, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said today.

Addressing the first meeting of the Information Technology Task Force here, Mr Karunanidhi said Tamil Nadu was the first state in India to bring out a comprehensive IT policy under the DMK rule in 1997.

He said software exports from the state had crossed Rs 20,000 crore in the financial year 2006-07.

Stating that Tamil Nadu had emerged as a front runner in both hardware manufacturing as well as software exports, he said a number of major electronic hardware manufacturers had evinced interest in setting up plants in the state.

He said the government would invite valuable suggestions from the industry doyens while formulating policies for the development of the Information Communication Tecnology (ICT) sector.
