Cuttack bandh to protest waterlogging

Cuttack, Aug 23 (UNI) More than 500 activists of four Opposition political parties were arrested in the city during today's bandh to protest frequent waterlogging and the apathetic attitude of the authorities to resolve it.

Most of the business establishments, shops, business houses, major educational institutions were closed in response to the bandh, called by the CPI, CPI-M, Forward Bloc and the Samajwadi Party The functioning of the High Court and lower courts remained paralysed as the lawyers did not attend the court.

The bandh supporters were arrested as they tried to block the National Highway, resort to picketing and obstruct the traffic at various points in the city.

Prominent leaders arrested were CPI-M Cuttack district General Secretary Subash Singh, state Forward Bloc General Secretary Santosh Mishra, Samajawadi Party district General Secretary Arjun Mahakud and CPI Cuttack city Secretary Jaydev Jena.

Police said no untoward incident was reported during the bandh period.
