CMDA to submit 2nd master plan draft to Govt in Oct:Minister

Chennai, Aug 23 (UNI) The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) would submit the draft of Second Master Plan to the state Government in October, State Minister for Information and Urban Development Parithi Ilamvazhuthi announced today.

Talking to newspersons here, he said so far 14 public consultations were held to get the feedback from individuals, experts and civic groups on the master plan and a workshop would be held on August 29 and 30 to discuss it.

All good suggestions would be incorporated in the plan, he added.

To a query, CMDA vice-chairman, G Santhanam said construction of multistoreyed buildings would also be allowed outside Corporation limits of Chennai under the second master plan.

On demarcation of residential and commercial areas, he said 'we are following the mixed zone system in CMDA and we do not have exclusive zones for residential and commercial purposes'.

The Minister said the CMDA would also undertake a complete study of the transportation needs of Chennai at a cost of Rs two crore under the ongoing Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project-III being funded by the World Bank.

The study was being conducted to find a solution to the traffic chaos and formulate a viable strategy for the betterment of transport system in the city.

The 18-month long study on city transport system would provide a directional plan for the entire CMDA, he added.

On the need for satellite townships, he said Government would take appropriate decision at the right time.

''The Government is of the view that any development project should be implemented without affecting the local people,'' he said.

When queried on the status of Justice Mohan Committee report which was set up following the Supreme Court order to demolish all the illegal structures in Chennai, he said the panel would submit its report to the state Government in the next two months.
