BJP expresses concern over increasing farmer suicides
Jamshedpur, Aug 23 (UNI) The BJP today expressed concern over the increasing number of suicidal cases of the farmers after the UPA government at the Centre came to power and urged the latter to adopt pro-farmer policy.
Talking to the mediapersons here, national general secretary of the BJP's Kishan Morcha Sunil Kumar Singh said more than 6000 farmers committed suicide in the past three and half years as the UPA government failed to initiate policies that would be beneficial to the agricultural sector.
Mr Singh said the condition of the farmers was deteriorating day by day and 42 per cent farmers were reluctant to stay with the agricultural sector.
He also criticised the contract farming system in the country and said such an experiment was a failure in the US also.
Mr Singh said the government was yet to implement the insurance scheme on agricultural income and stressed the need for foodgrains security for the farmers.
To a question, he said the August 29 Jamshedpur Loksabha bypoll would be the referendrum on the 'misrule' of the UPA government and claimed that party candidate Dinesh Sarangi would win the seat with a big margin.
