Mah govt to request HC for special courts

Mumbai, Aug 22 (UNI) The Maharashtra government has decided to request the High court to form special courts for the speedy disposal of pending cases registerd during the 1992-93 riots.

A decision to this effect was taken at the cabinet meeting here this afternoon.

The government has also decided to appoint a high-power committee, headed by additional chief secretary (home), to take a review of the number of criminal cases of the riots still pending in court.

The committee will comprise principal secretary (law and judiciary), legal experts, police officials and others.

The committee will bring to notice of the high court about the number of cases pending in various courts.

It will take a review twice every month about the progress of cases and apprise the same to the chief minister and the deputy chief minister.

The committee will also ascertain if the cases were not filed due to negligence of the police.
