Let us join hands to preserve resources for future: Dikshit

New Delhi, Aug 22 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today called upon all people to join hands to preserve national resources for future requirements and make use of new and renewable energy sources.

Speaking at a state level Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas 2007 celebrations, jointly organized by the TERI and the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Chief Minister exhorted children to propagate renewable energy sources as natural resources being utilised for generation of energy are not going to last longer.

The birthday of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is celebrated as Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas as an annual feature since 2004.

On this occasion marathon, mass rallies, human chains/runs, competitions such as essay writing, paintings, quiz and debates, etc. on the theme of New and Renewable Energy sources are organised not only in state capitals and other major cities of different states but also in all the districts of the country.

Addressing the gathering, where Union Minister for State for New and Renewable Energy Vilas Muttemwar and Director General TERI Dr R K Pachauri were also present, Ms Dikshit said her Government had been giving grant of Rs 6000 for purchase of solar water heater to individuals to promote alternative source of energy.

A team comprising of school children and energy conservators would be constituted and directed to inspect hotels and other buildings where installation of solar energy equipments have been made comp/ulsory.

The Government has also been encouraging construction of green buildings especially for Commonwealth Games.

On the occasion, she complimented constructive role of children and eco-clubs in making Delhi a greenest city in India. Delhi is also probably the fifth such city in the world. It also has been able to curb pollution by providing largest CNG public transport fleet.
