ASEAN ministers to discuss Nuke safety

Singapore, Aug 22: Ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will consider the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the ASEAN Power Grid and the setting up of a Nuclear Energy Safety Sub Sector Network (NES-SSN), it was announced here.

The ASEAN Ministers will be deliberating on wide range of energy issues during their meeting scheduled for tommorow in Singapore, said the organising committee for ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting in Singapore.

This is the first time that Energy Ministers from Australia, India and New Zealand will be joining the ASEAN + 3 Energy Ministers from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Japan and South Korea for the first East Asian Summit Energy Ministers Meeting (first EAS EMM), said the statement.

EAS Energy Ministers will consider the recommendations from the three working streams of the EAS Energy Cooperation Task Force (EAS ECTF), covering Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Energy Market Integration and Biofuels for transport and other uses, the statement said.

ASEAN and 3 Energy Ministers will consider the extensive work programme in the five cooperation forums of the AMEM.

The 25th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (25th AMEM), 4th ASEAN and 3 Ministers on Energy Meeting (4th AMEM) and first EAS EMM will be held here tommorow.

The meetings will be held consecutively, and will be Chaired by Singapore's Minister of State for Trade and Industry Mr S Iswaran.

Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Law Professor S Jayakumar will be the Guest-of-Honour at the Opening Ceremony.

The theme for this year's 25th ASEAN Energy Ministers' Meeting is, "Energising ASEAN to Power a Dynamic Asia".
