UP: 4 sentenced to life for journalist's murder

Jaunpur, Aug 22: Four accused, including former president of Kerakat's Nagar Panchayat, have been sentenced to life for the murder of a journalist, by a local court.

The judgement was given by District Judge S C Agarwal yesterday.

According to the prosecution, a complaint was filed by one Vijay Kumar Gupta, resident of Narhan colony of Kerakat, alleging his brother Paras Nath Gupta alias Pappu, a journalist by profession, was shot dead by five armed miscreants on May 13, 2005.

Six people, including former Kerakat's Nagar Panchayat president Ashok Sahu, were found guilty in the crime, which was suspected to be done over panchayat election.

Besides imprisonment, Ashok was slapped a fine of Rs 25,000.

Three other accused, identified as Sanjay Yadav, Anil Yadav and Om Prakash alias Bhuttu, were imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each.

Hearing of two other accused in the case was pending.
