BHEL bags Damodar Valley contracts

New Delhi, Aug 21: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won contracts worth more than Rs 6,500 crore from Damodar Valley Corporation for setting up two power projects of 1,000 MW each in Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Slated for synchronisation during the 11th Plan, the projects are identified to supply power to Delhi for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Under the contracts, BHEL will set up two units of 500 MW each at Koderma Thermal Power Station (TPS) in Jharkhand and two units of 500 MW each at Durgapur Steel TPS in West Bengal, both on turnkey basis, a Company spokesman said here today.

On commissioning, the projects are expected to add 48 million units every day to the Grid.

The Company will manufacture, supply and commission steam turbines, generators, boilers, associated auxiliaries and Electricals, besides state-of-the-art controls and instrumentation, electrostatic precipitators and Switchyard, including civil works.

BHEL has fully established state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 500 MW rating and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating. So far, orders for 58 numbers of 500 MW rating sets have been won, of which 31 have been commissioned.
