Assam AUDF MLA sent to jail

Guwahati, Aug 21: AUDF MLA from Lower Assam's Dhubri constituency Rashul Haq Bahadur has been sent to jail on various charges, including vandalism, after a CJM court rejected a plea of the MLA.

The MLA had pleaded that he was a heart patient and had to be treated in Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Police said the legislator and nine others have been arrested on August 19 last under several sections of the IPC after an FIR from a Congress worker alleging that Mr Bahadur and his supporters had vandalised a Congress office at Jogomayaghat in Dhubri and attacked party workers who were inside it. The CJM court of Ashok Kumar Bora yesterday rejected the MLA's appeal and sent all the ten to jail. The jail superintendent was asked to monitor the health of the legislator and refer him to the Dhubri civil hospital in case the need be. According to court sources, the MLA, facing non-bailable charges, is likely to undergo a minimum of three months term or till the inquiry in complete.

Situation was tense in the Dhubri town after stray incidents of violence marred a bandh, purportedly called by the Congress to sabotage a rally of the AUDF yesterday.

The Congress and the AUDF have been at loggerheads in the constituency since the latter wrested the seat.

Mr Bahadur had faced a lot of flak after he hogged the headlines recently proposing an 'independent council' for the minorities engulfing the districts in lower Assam.
