IIT Kharagpur to construct flyover for better connectivity

Kolkata, Aug 18 (UNI) IIT-Kharagpur (IIT-K) today announced the decision to initiate the construction of a flyover by this year, connecting the institute with the railway station, Director Damodar Acharya sadid here today.

Talking to media persons here a Dr Acharya said Rs 24 crore had been alloted for the construction of the flyover and the improvement of the Highways.

IIT-K also gave away Nina Sexana Excellence in Technology Award, 2007 to Dr SPS Khanuja, Director of CIMAP, Lucknow, Out of the total fund alloted for the work, the Railway Ministry would be contributing 37.5 per cent while the West Bengal Government would be providing another 37.5 per cent.

''This time we have given the resposibility of the construction work to only one agency so as to expedite the construction work,'' Dr Acharya said.

He also said that some projects like a Steel Industry Research Centre worth Rs 20 crore, Tea Engineering Research Centre worth Rs 16 crore, a Coffee Engineering Research Centre worth Rs three crore would soon be taken up by IIT-K.

Besides, a Mobile Communication Research Centre worth Rs 12 crore would be constructed in collaboration with Vodafone and some other partners.

A SAB facility centre worth Rs 50 crore would be taken up by the institute with the help of Central Information and Technology Department.

''We are also trying to increase the hostel capacity upto 2,000-3,000 keeping in view the increasing number of students every year. Currently, the hostel is facing a shortage of 1,500 rooms.
