Workshop to promote sustainable urban development

Chandigarh, Aug 17 (UNI) Promoting good governance and sustainable development by enhancing the role of officials and non-officials through capacity building programme were the emerging issues of the 21st century, Punjab Industry and Local Government Minister Manoranjan Kalia said here today.

Speaking on the concluding day of a major workshop on Urban Governance, the minister said the major concern relating to urban infrastructure were roads, water supply, sanitation, drainage, solid waste management, transportation network and environment protection.

The challenge was to promote sustainable urban development to improve quality of life, Mr Kalia stressed.

Punjab Local Government Principal Secretary D S Bains said that with mandate planning at greassroot level and improved delivery of public services, the urban governance was slated to meet aspirations of the urban population.

The workshop was organised by Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial development (CRRID) in collaboration with National institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi.
