Akola, Aug 16: The bench at Nagpur of the Bombay High Court today declared the appointment of Abdul Rauf as Leader of Opposition in the Akola Municipal Corporation (AMC) illegal.

Mr Rauf, a corporator of BRP-BMS, had been appointed as Leader of Opposition in the AMC recently by Mayor Madan Bhargad (Congress) despite no requisite strength. Congrees-NCP is the ruling party in AMC.

BRP-BMS, which has 10 corporators in the AMC, had appointed Mr Rauf as Leader of Opposition on support from one NCP Corporator.

Vilas Shelke of BJP challanged Mr Rauf's appointment as Leader of Opposition on the basis of no requisite strength. He had filed a writ in the bench at Nagpur of the High Court.

The division bench, comprising Justice A S Joshi and Justice R C Chavan, declared Mr Rauf's appointment illegal.

Incidentally, Rauf is now in police custody for allegedly murdering one Kuddush Khan of Akot area here since the last three days, the official sources said.
