Petition on President's nomination laid off: SC

New Delhi, Aug 17: The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition seeking cancellation of the nomination papers of President Pratibha Patil as "infructuous". A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Ravindran dismissed the petition on the ground that the elections are already over and the relief demanded by the petitioner cannot be granted now.

Mr Manohar Lal Sharma, an advocate, had earlier filed a petition challenging the order of the Election Commission dismissing a complaint against UPA nominee for President Pratibha Patil.

According to the petitioner, Pratibha Patil was a Chairperson of a sugar mill in Maharashtra which has defaulted in the repayment of loan of Rs 17.5 crore. The Cooperative Bank started by her was also facing allegations of corruption as the RBI had cancelled the license of the Bank after it found that the loan was granted by Pratibha Patil to her relative. Most of the loans were not repaid and even one day salary was deducted by the bank for Kargil war relief fund was not deposited.

Mrs Pratibha Patil is also facing allegations of shielding her brother allegedly involved in a murder case. Earlier, the court has dismissed Mr Sharma's petition giving him liberty to approach the appropriate authority for redressal of his grievance.
