Jamait-Ulema against Left amending MPL

Agartala, Aug 17: The Tripura unit of Jamait-Ulema, an apex body of Islam community, has lambasted the state government for it's demand to change Muslim Personal Law (MPL).

The demand was raised during a Muslim convention organised by Left parties here on August first.

Sources here today said the Jamiat-Ulema Tripura Committee (JUTSC) has submitted a 12-point charter of demands to the Left government yesterday, including reservation of five seats for Muslims in the 60-member house and government jobs.

Opposing Left's proposal to amend the MPL, JUTSC president Mufti Toibur Rahaman alleged that the party wanted to change the Koran and Hadis, which was scripted by Mohammed Prophet.

''We consider the move as a direct interference into Islamic tradition,'' he added.

He had also demanded the government to take initiative to uplift the Muslim community.
