CPI(ML) demands CBI probe into Karbi Anglong killings
Guwahati, Aug 17 (UNI) The state CPI(ML) unit today demanded a CBI probe into the recent killings of 29 Hindi-speaking people in the state's Karbi Anglong district.
The party had also alleged that the Congress-led state government had failed to take any step in this regard.
''What is binding the government from taking adequate action to control the carnage which has become a regular annual affair ever since the Congress came to power?,'' CPI(ML) leader and former Assam MP Jayanta Rongpi sought to know during a news conference here.
Mr Rongpi said the state government's 'planned inaction' and 'lack of political will' have encouraged the militants to carry out such heinous acts.
''It was noticed that the militants went on a killing spree as soon as the district council issued a circular barring non-tribal from possessing land pattas,'' the former MP alleged.
A four member CPI(ML) delegation, comprising Bihar MLA Amarnath Yadav and CPI(ML) politburo member Rameshwar Prasad had visited the trouble-torn district and the relief camps in the last couple of days.
Mr Yadav said the government and militants were denying the people of their fundamental rights to live and work anywhere within the country.
Coming down heavily on the state's lax security apparatus, Mr Rongpi alleged that whenever there were such killings, the Congress had gained political mileage.
''The mayhem is directly proportionate to the votes bagged by the Congress. During the last elections, it got majority of the votes in the militant dominated places,'' he said adding that despite being in absolute power in the district, it had failed to maintain the law and order during the last six years.
He also alleged that the Congress always had a nexus with the militant outfits.
He also ridiculed the MPs of Assam for their absence in the floor, whenever the parliament raised the 'Karbi Anglong issue'.
The party had also demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation to the kins of the 29 Hindi-speaking people killed in Karbi Anglong.
