Indian I-day celebrated in US

New York, Aug 16: India's Independence Day was celebrated at the Consulate General here on Friday, Aug 15. Consul General Neelam Deo read out parts of President Prathiba Patil's speech focusing on various aspects emphasising on important issues central to India's growth and development. These included, ''Womens' development, friendship with all countries, India's development in various fields.'' The gathering constituted 500 people mostly Indians and people of Indian origin.

A few very important guests graced the occasion includig New Jersey Transport Commissioner Mr Kris Kolleri who gave a brief speech and revealed as to how he came to US 22 years ago along with his family which is very happy and has been getting ''constant blessings of Indians.'' He praised India saying the country is following the rules of democracy which is vital for its development.

Mr Kris made a relevant point saying India is still a young nation because a large chunk of its population is still very young and 60 years is not a big time time in the life of a nation which enjoys rich cultural heritage.

For the last many years, events like ''Open house'' are organised on the occasion of Independence Day and Republic Day. These events are commemorated by Indians and people of Indian origin.

The Indian community will organise India Day Parade in Tri-state area on Sunday which is the largest of its kind event outside India.
