Haneef's colleague Dr Ali set to leave Oz today
Sydney, Aug 16: Indian born doctor Mohammed Asif Ali, detained during investigation into Dr Mohamed Haneef's case is set to leave Australia as early as today.
Dr Ali was hoping to have the Australian Federal Police (AFP) return his passport to him today in order to leave the country, said Neil Lawler, his lawyer.
Dr Ali, a colleague of Dr Haneef at the Gold Coast Hospital doctor was suspended after the AFP found that he had exaggerated his qualifications.
Sources said that the Queensland Government would be happy to allow him to leave in order to avoid further embarrassment over his employment on the basis of doubtful credentials.
Queensland Government sources last night denied knowledge of plans to allow Dr Ali to leave.
They said Dr Ali was a junior doctor who would have been employed in any event on the basis of his actual qualifications.
The AFP reportedly ascertained that Dr Ali, who was suspended, had exaggerated his job experience in India by three months, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
He was also allegedly found possessing rubber stamps and letterheads that could support forged curriculum vitae, the AFP said.
Dr Ali was detained temporarily when his friend and colleague, Dr Haneef was held for questioning over alleged links to the accused of the failed Glasgow Airport car-bombings.
