Unique event to commemorate India's Independence day

Washington, Aug 14 (UNI) A unique event to bring together non-resident Indians and Pakistanis together and to comemmorate India's and Pakistan's Independence Day has been organised by a food television network, a journalists association and an arts council in New York on August 14.

Called ''Flavors Beyond Borders'', the event, organised by iFood.tv, South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) and Indo- American Arts Council is aimed at celebrating the two South Asians' 60th Independence Day.

A SAJA statement says, ''This historic event will use food and music as a medium to spread the message of peace, brotherhood and harmony among the people of the two nations. People from across the border will feast on a hearty meal specially prepared by renowned chefs of the two nations and enjoy the musical performances by acclaimed singers.'' The program would begin with the recitation of the national anthems of both the countries by noted Rabindra Sangeet singer Isheeta Ganguly. It will be hosted by Kiran Khalid, freelance TV reporter and Sree Sreenivasan of SAJA/WNBC. Keynote Speaker would be Samina Ahmad, noted Pakistani food and health expert.

The highlight of the event would be a 20-plus item buffet meal including the best of non-vegetarian and vegetarian cuisine from India and Pakistan. Some of the dishes to be included in the menu are Green peas croquet, Salmon Crab Cakes, Malabari Chicken with chutney, Grilled Lamb Chops, Kadahi Paneer, Aloo Gobhi, Kheer, among others.

The food will be prepared by famous chefs -- all from New York -- such as Chef Vikas of Purnima, Chef Hemant of Devi, Chef Rawat of Bukahara Grill, Chef Hari Nayak and Syed Khan of Haandi in New York.
