Turkish formin Gul to stand for presidency -- TV
ANKARA, Aug 13 (Reuters) Turkey's ruling Islamist-rooted AK Party has re-nominated Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul as its candidate to stand in a presidential election next week, Turkish broadcasters CNN Turk and NTV said today.
AK Party officials could not confirm the report but said Gul would visit opposition party leaders tomorrow -- a signal that he indeed intends to run.
Parliament holds a first round of the presidential election next Monday, more than three months after the secularist elite, who include powerful army generals, derailed a first bid to have Gul, an ex-Islamist, elected as head of state.
