Committee to work out security force deployment in JK

New Delhi, Aug 14 (UNI) The government has constituted a Committee, under the Chairmanship of the Defence Secretary, to examine the overall situation in Jammu and Kashmir and consequential deployent of security forces.

The Committee will determine whether there is need to relocate and configurate the existing security forces deployment, Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

It would also conduct a parallel exercise to review the application of the Armed Forces (Jammu&Kashmir) Special Powers Act 1990 to different areas of the state.

Mr Jaiswal said the review would be carried out in confirmity with the legal requirements of a periodic review of the application of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.

The Minister said the Report of the Committee has yet to be submitted to the government.

Mr Jaiswal said there have been demands and from time to time seeking reduction in the level of security force deployment in the State in view of the overall improvement in the security environment. "The approach of the government is to esnure that the deployment of security forces is related to the scale of problems and requirements on the ground", he said.
