Security tightened in northeast ahead of Aug15
Imphal, Aug 13: With Independence Day just two days away, security has been tightened in insurgency-hit Manipur, and other northeastern states.
Security forces are on high alert and patrolling has been intensified.
Manipur capital Imphal has been virtually converted into a garrison.
A number of underground rebel organisations including the Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF), have called for a boycott of Independence Day celebrations.
"We have read in the papers regarding their call for boycott of the function. So in view of the situation, we are taking up maximum precautions including deployment of our forces at strategic places," said Clay Khongsai, Superintendent of Police, Imphal West.
Dozens of militant outfits, fighting for independence or autonomy in the region, have threatened to disrupt the Independence Day celebrations.
India celebrates its 61st Independence Day on August 15, even as the northeast battles insurgencies.
Thousands of people have been killed in insurgent-related violence over decades in the region.
