Flood-related deaths cross 400, diarrhoea infects 44,000 people

Dhaka, Aug 13 (UNI) The death toll from the current summer floods in Bangladesh today climbed to a staggering 405 as the overall flood situation deteriorated following a downpour triggered by a land depression, officials said.

After some improvement in the flood situation in the last few days, the floods again hit the country's 39 out of 64 districts affecting more than ten million people, a bulletin of the Disaster Management Ministry said.

According to statistics of the Health Directorate, of 405 deaths, 360 people drowned, 24 died from snakebite, seven of respiratory problem and 14 of diarrhoea.

It said over 48,423 people were infected by diarrhoea, 7,837 were suffering from respiratory problems, 7,581 from skin diseases and 1,766 from eye complications since the flood began on July 30.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) said a heavy downpour triggered by land depression that formed over West Bengal and adjoining area in Bangladesh has deteriorated the flood situation across the country, particularly in the capital.
