Axis Software develops world's first Linux-based biometric ATM

New Delhi, Aug 13 (UNI) Country's leading biometrics technology company Axis Software Pvt Ltd today said it has developed the world's first Linux-based biometric ATM.

The machine offers highest level of security and requires very little hardware resources like RAM and ROM, which helps in bringing down the end-user prices, said a statement.

The use of Biometric solutions for providing banking facilities at doorstep, like using smart cards for opening bank accounts with biometric identification, presents great potential for scalability of the FI initiatives.

The term 'Biometrics' is referred to the emerging field of IT, devoted to automated identification of individuals using biological traits, such as those based on retinal or iris scanning, voice patterns, dynamic signatures, fingerprints, face recognition, or hand measurements, especially for authentication purposes.

The biometrics industry is seeing a tremendous growth globally on account of its extensive range of applications from civil ID to attendance marking to criminal justice to physical access to a computer, to doors and other facilities.

It also straddles a lot of different technologies like voice, face, skin texture, hand geometry, human iris etc.

''Over the next one ot two years, we will see a lot of technologies coming up in the biometric space and there is great future. We aim for significant success in the marketplace and by progressively expanding sales and marketing efforts, we plan to capitalise on the growing interest in the sector,'' said company Chief Executive Officer Abhay Khinvasara.

The plan is expected to require funding of 20 million dollars and the company is looking at raising the funds from both existing investors and outside parties.

Post-expansion, Axis is looking at a turnover of Rs 450 crore by 2010. Its first phase of expansion will entail an investment of 10 million dollars, and the second phase will start in 2008-09.

The company expects the sales to grow by more than 400 per cent in the current fiscal.
