Surprise raids at all jail premises in UP

Lucknow, Aug 12(UNI) Stepping up security measures in view of the Independence day celebrations, Uttar Pradesh government today conducted surprise raids on different jails across the state.

According to official sources, the raids were conducted in all the district and central jails of the state with senior officials of the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) supervising the raids.

Information available from the state police headquarters said raids were underway at Lucknow, Meerut, Sitapur, Mau, Gazipur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur, Faizabad, Agra, Gorakhpur and others.

Details about the seizures during the raids was yet to be disclosed by the officials.

Earlier in June last, the Mayawati government had directed all district magistrates and district police superintendents to carry out surprise simultaneous raids in different parts of the state.

During the raids prohibited material were seized in 23 of the state's 60 jails.
