Kolhapur, Aug 12 (UNI) Incessant rains that lashed Kolhapur for the last few days abated today.

The sun shone for a while in the morning and people came out to bask in it.

People residing at the banks of the Panchaganga river gave a sigh of relief after its swollen waters started receding. Heavy rains and rising water level had created panic among the people residing near the river during the last few days.

The river continues to be in spate, but its water level today lowered slightly. It is flowing at the height of 40.4 feet, which is still above warning mark, district collectorate spokesman said here today.

About 4,600 cusecs of water was discharged from three automatic gates of Radhanagari dam, he said and added that the district has recorded a total rainfall of 318.6 mm during the last 24 hours ended this morning.

Three villages -- Rajapur, Rajapurwadi and Khidrapur -- in Shirol tehsil of the district continue to be cut off for the sixth consecutive day today, he added.
