Islamabad, Aug 12: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that he would be re-elected from the current assemblies, but would seek endorsement of his election from the new assemblies formed after the general elections.

"I will be re-elected from the sitting assemblies as the Constitution allows me to do so. But I will seek approval from the next assemblies too, as I want to keep on good terms with them," Musharraf told a delegation of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS).

Musharraf said he would abide by the law and the Constitution on every matter including his re-election.

He said the general elections would be held under a caretaker government and pledged that these would be fair and transparent.

"I will welcome whatever proposals come from any party with reference to fair and transparent elections," he said, adding that he had never closed the door to talks with any opposition party.

Commenting on the imposition of an emergency in the country, he said that several people, including PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, advised him to proclaim an emergency.

"But I did not sign such orders as I stand by my commitment that the assemblies will complete their term and elections will be held in a transparent manner," the Daily Times quoted, Musharraf, as saying.
