Patna, Aug 10 (UNI) A new window of opportunity for learning in Bihar was opened with the launch of ''American Corner'', a library of American books and periodicals on a wide range of subjects, here today.

U S Consul General in Kolkata Henry V Jardine inaugurated the library.

Set up in joint collaboraion with the Bihar Industries Association (BIA), the American Corner was opened with a collection of about 400 books on a wide range of subjects, including different aspects of Indo-US relations, American democracy, American foreign policy, American literature, religion and the development of science and technology, besides computer education.

A large collection of nearly 40 periodicals, DVDs and CD-ROMs also found a place in the ''American Corner''.

Inaugurating the library as an extension of the American Center Library in Kolkata, Mr Jardine hoped that it would help not only the student and research communities of Bihar, but also the general public, who wanted to know more about the US and its policies in a larger perspective.

''The corner will provide a glimpse of the life and culture of the US and will be an outstabnding resource to obtain accurate and up-to-date information about political, economic, cultural, educational and social trends in America,'' the US Consul General said adding the corner would also host several American scholars and speakers during their proposed visit to Patna.

Concerned at the devastating flood situation in the state which had claimed more than 120 lives so far, besides affecting over 14 million people, Mr Jardine announced the contribution of USD 50,000 (Rs two million) to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Welcoming the US initiative in the state, Bihar Assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Chowdhury said the American Corner would go a long way in helping the general public know more about the US and its relations with India.

He also urged the consul general to help provide technical assistance to the state government to preserve its many important documents through micro-filming and other state of the art processes, to which Mr Jardine responded positively.

Among others, Bihar Science and Technology Minister Anil Kumar and Director of American Center at Kolkata Douglas G Kelly were present on the occasion.

Incidentally, Bihar Governor R S Gavai, who was to attend the programme as the chief guest, could not come due to urgent pre-occupation.
