Hardwar, Aug 10 (UNI) Two kanwarias drowned here last evening in separate incidents while they were taking a dip in the Ganga river.

Sources said Dharmveer, a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana, who, along with his friends, had come to the holy city to take Ganga jal, slipped in the Ganga, while taking a dip in the river. By the time the units of divers reached the spot, the kanwaria had been swept away by the swift water current.

In another incident, a kanwaria, hailing from Karnal in Haryana, had gone out with friends in his jeep towards Shyampur for an excursion. He slipped in the east Ganga canal, while taking bath and was swept away.

The irate kanwarias jammed Hardwar-Moradabad national highway.

Civil and police officials, led by the ADM, Vinod Raturi and SP (city) Ajay Joshi, who rushed to the spot, had a tough time pacifying the infuriated kanwarias.

On the demand of the kanwarias, the canal was dried up by closing it at Bheemgoda barrage to recover the dead body. However, even after a search operation of two hours, the units of the divers of the PAC and the Bengal Engineering Group (BEG) and Centre Roorkee could not trace the dead body of the kanwaria.
