Two elephants run over by train in Assam
Guwahati, Aug 10 (UNI) Two elephants, including a calf, were killed when they were hit by a goods train near Deepor Beel, on the outskirts of Guwahati.
Official sources here today said the accident occurred when the jumbos were crossing the railway track at the Kamakhya-Azara section of Northeastern Frontier Railway on August three.
While the calf was mutilated, the adult elephant fell into a pond after being hit by the train and died.
''The forest department routinely monitors animal movement in the sector and the railways are alerted whenever such movement near the tracks is noticed. However, the site of the present accident did not come under the area of supervision,'' forest department sources said.
