Rupee closes at 40.64 per USD

Mumbai, Aug 10: The Rupee today closed at 40.64 per US dollar and was marked by a depreciation of nearly 12 paise against the dollar as compared to the previous close of 40.52/53 per dollar.

Rupee opened at 40.65/69 per dollar in volatile trading at the interbank foreign exchange market this morning and traded at lower level of Rs 40.69 for some time before quoting at a high of Rs 40.62 per dollar, dealers said.

Forex dealers attributed the weakening of Rupee against American Greenback to the bearish mood in stock market and overall weak trend in global financial markets. It is also expected that rupee might further depreciate and open at the level of around 41.00 per dollar on Monday, dealers added.

Meanwhile, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today fixed the reference rate at Rs 40.67 per US dollar, down by 27 paise, compared to yesterday's rate of Rs 40.40 per USD, an RBI spokesperson said.

Forward premia today took a slight change, for six-months it was quoted at 1.90 (1.99) per cent while one year premia ended at 1.94 (1.85) per cent.

Rupee today performed stronger against major world currencies.

Against Euro it ended stronger at 55.46 (55.58/59) per unit, Pound Sterling at 81.60 (82.07/08) per unit while Japanese Yen was quoted weaker at 34.40 (34.15/16) per hundred units.
