Imphal, Aug 10 (UNI) The Manipur government has formed a technical committee to verify the abnormally low and high population growth recorded in some divisions of the state in the 2001 census.

Under Secretary of State Home Department Th Amalkumar said the committee was formed as per the decision of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. Principal Secretary (Home) PBO Warjiri would be the chairman of the committee, besides four other members, he added.

The committee will examine the verification process and enquire into the reasons for abnormally low and high population growth in some sub-divisions of Manipur as per the 2001 census. It will also suggest remedial measures so that the socio-economic development and planning of the state could be taken up in an equitable and fair manner.

The technical committee shall submit its report within three months and devise its own methodology and all concerned shall provide necessary support for timely completion of the work, the secretary said.

Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and 17 leaders of other regional parties had discussed the matter with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in New Delhi recently.

All the political parties demanded the Delimitation Commission to maintain status quo in the 60-member House as the 2001 Census was found to be incorrect.
