Coimbatore, Aug 10 (UNI) The Coimbatore Press Club today strongly condemned the ''barbaric and brutal attack'' unleashed on the West Bengal-based Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen by the Majlis-e Ittehadul Musilimeen (MIM) Legislators in Hyderabad.

In a statement here, Press Club President V S Palaniappan said it was unfortunate that the members of the legislative body had chosen to take law and order into their hands.

Any resentment or opposition to the writer or her ideologies should have been expressed through democratic forms of protest and resorting to violence and assault on a person could be seen only as a gross intolerance towards freedom of expression, which could not be approved by any civilised society , he said.

It was unfortunate that the Press Club premises was turned into a ground for unleashing violence and it was a challenge posed to the freedom of expression, he said, appealing to the Andhra Pradesh Government to take stringent action against those involved in the attack.
