Tripura govt failed to protect civil rights: Congress
Agartala, Aug 9 (UNI) The Congress party leaders today alleged that the Tripura government has failed to adequately protect the civil rights of the people.
Addressing a public rally called by a section of Congress leaders led by state Congress president Samir Ranjan Barman, All India Mahila Congress Committee General Secretary Rita Bahuguna Joshi said Tripura has acquired the highest position in women atrocities including rape and molestation.
She alleged that the law and order situation in the state was gradually detoriating and the people could not safely move from one district to another without having to worry about their own safety.
On the other hand, eight Congress legislators had boycotted the rally and alleged that Mr Barman had announced the rally without consultating the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee.
''We want Mr Barman removed from his post as president,'' said Congress legislator and senior party leader Prakash Chandra Das and added that both Mr Bapna and Ms Joshi were misguided by the Barman faction.
