JERUSALEM, Aug 9 (Reuters) An Israeli military court has indicted an officer accused of hijacking a Palestinian taxi and shooting an unarmed man during an unauthorised operation in the occupied West Bank last month, the army said today.

''The accused grossly endangered the lives of his soldiers, his own life, and the lives of the Palestinian residents in the area,'' the court said.

In what was supposed to be a routine foot patrol through the outskirts of the town of Daharia, the lieutenant ordered his squad of five soldiers to hijack a taxi and its driver and enter the town in search of wanted militants, the court said.

One of the soldiers shot and wounded a Palestinian. The accused officer, whose identity was not released, drove on without giving the man medical care or reporting the incident on July 26 to his commanders.

The court said the officer acted on his own initiative against military procedure and will be charged with six counts of misconduct, including aggravated assault, overstepping his authority and false imprisonment.

The officer was placed in custody after the incident and will be held until the end of his legal proceedings.

The injured man, Ashraf Sanamre, a 27-year-old construction worker, was later treated in an Israeli hospital.
