Shimla, Aug 9 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said his government would re-examine the idea of having Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the state protecting the interest of the people.

Talking to media persons at the 'Meet the Press' organised by Shimla Press Club here today, Mr Virbhadra Singh said the already sanctioned SEZs in Una, Kangra and Waknaghat in Solan district would be examined again. This would be done considering the needs and benefits of the farmers, he added.

The three SEZs were approved in principle by the Union government some time ago and the work for preparing Detailed Project Reports of these sites was under way.

Mr Virbhadra Singh said personally, he was not in favour of the SEZs, as the state was largely an agrarian state. The interests of the farmers would be protected, he said.

To a question, he said the State Government would not acquire the land for SEZs and the companies would directly have to approach the farmer.

''Farmers would have full rights to sell the land directly to the company and strike a best deal,'' he added.

Mr Virbhadra Singh said the government had given approval to the prestigious Himalayan Ski Village project in Manali.
