Civil liberty activists demand action against Saamna
Mumbai, Aug 9 (UNI) A group of eminent civil liberty activists today called on Mumbai Police Commissioner D N Jadhav and submitted a representation, urging him to take action against Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna.
''The Saamna newspaper has been found guilty by the Srikrishna Commission of fanning violence. We urge you to take action against the Saamna,'' the representation said adding that the citizens should be informed about the action taken against Saamna.
Those who called on the Police Commissioner included Anil Dharker, Naresh Fernandes, Kiran Nagarkar, Javed Anand and Teesta Setalvad.
Stating that Teesta Setalvad had prepared a detailed compilation of about 189 cases fit to be reopened or looked at rigorously for that purpose, the representation also posed certain questions to the Police Commissioner and sought replies at the earliest.
According to the representation, after the Commission report in 1998, the then state government had appointed a Committee under the then Director General of Police Inamdar with a 40-member team to look into the report's implementation.
Of the 1,371 cases that were examined by this Committee, 112 cases were identified as meriting attention. After examining the merits of each case, only eight were chargesheeted and five of these cases were still pending.
