APCC chief's call to people

Hyderabad, Aug 9 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President K Keshava Rao today called upon the people to imbibe the principles of Mahatma Gandhi who always stood for integrity and progress of the downtrodden.

Unfurling the party flag at the state party headquarters 'Gandhi Bhavan' in connection with the 65th anniversary of 'Quit India Day' and Youth Congress Day here, he said the country achieved independence after a great struggle.

''The Congress had always followed the principles of Mahatma Gandhi by initiating welfare measures to uplift the backward and downtrodden people in the country,'' he said.

He said the Andhra Pradesh Government, headed by Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, had taken up several welfare measures, including distribution of lands to landless, construction of houses for the poor and Jalayagnam to provide irrigation water to backward areas to improve economic conditions of the farmers.

State Youth Congress President P Sudhakar Babu, adddressing the gathering, said some sections of people who opposed developmental measures taken up by the state government should 'quit Andhra Pradesh.' The Youth Congress activitists took a pledge to fight against communalism, terrorism and work hard for the state's development.

AICC General Secretary and In-charge Andhra Affairs Divijay Singh, Dr Rajasekhara Reddy, State Ministers and large number of partymen attended the function.
