1200 convicts to get remission on Independence Day

Hyderabad, Aug 9 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Home Minister K Jana Reddy today announced that nearly 1,200 prisoners, both serving life and non-life terms, would get remission on the occasion of Independence Day and the celebration of the 150th year of the 'Sepoy Mutiny.' Talking to newspersons here, he said the government had followed the same guidelines adhered to by the previous governments while releasing prisoners in 1995, 1997 and 2003, as well as the guidelines framed by the Congress government after it came to power in 2004.

It also made it imperative that prisoners should execute a bond of Rs 25,000, attend the nearest court every three months, he said and clarified that the convicts would have to serve the sentence reduced on account of remission if they indulged in serious cases like murder or rape after their release.

The officials were instructed that persons, likely to pose any danger to the society should not be released, he said adding the list would be ready in two to three days.

Denying charges that political affiliations of the prisoners were being considered, the Home Minister appealed to the beneficiaries to live upto the expectations of the government and lead a life of good citizen after their release.
