Chennai, Aug 8 (UNI) A notorious rowdy wanted in as many as 16 cases surrendered before Chennai City Police Commissioner G Nanjil Kumaran.

''Maalaikan'' Selvam (45) of Madhavaram had been evading the police dragnet for more than five years. He had 16 cases, including murder and attempt to murder, pending against him.

Immediately after his surrender, Selvam was arrested and remanded to custody.

Hailing from Madhavaram in North Chennai, he went underground after the murder of one Senthil Kumaran of the same locality. Police did not rule out Selvam's involvement in the case.

Only last week, dreaded gangster 'Vellai Ravi' was killed in an encounter with the police in Krishnagiri. The incident followed a police crackdown on anti-social elements.

Police sources said Selvam surrendered following fears he would be caught in an encounter with the police.

After taking office, the CoP announced that crackdown on rowdy elements to prevent incidents of hired killings and gang wars would continue. The police would not even hestiate to shoot them down, he added.
