Kochi, Aug 8 (UNI) Former Supreme Court Judge V R Krishna Iyer today called for a change in the criminal procedures of the country to assure that people facing trial were not incarcerated in jails for a lond period of time.

Mr Iyer was speaking to reporters when People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nassar Maudhany, who was released from jail on August one after his acquittal in the Coimbatore serial blasts case, called on him at his residence here.

''The criminal procedures are archaic as it was drafted by the British, and the Central as well as State Governments should initiate steps to change them and provide justice to people,'' he noted.

''When a person is remanded time and again, the judge should verify the evidence against that person and deliver the judgement,'' Mr Iyer said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Maudhany lauded the efforts of Mr Iyer in pressing Tamil Nadu Government to provide medical treatment to him in Salem and Coimbatore jails.

''Citing human rights violation, Mr Iyer wrote letters to the authorities concerned to provide treatment to me,'' he said.

Terming the occasion as one of the happiest after being freed from jail and equating Mr Iyer to his father, Mr Maudhany said the former judge was the first to react strongly when serious charges were levelled against him.

Mr Maudhany accompanied by wife and children presented a pen and bottle of perfume to Mr Iyer.
