Jumbo attacks GP Secretary in Karnataka
Madikeri, Karnataka, Aug 8 (UNI) A Gram Panchayat Secretary was seriously injured when a wild elephant attacked two people at Nanjarayapatna in this hilly district.
The incident occurred last evening when Nellihudikeri Gram Panchayat Secretary B E Veeraraju and another person were walking home when a jumbo charged at them from behind the thick foliage of trees at once.
While Mr Veeraraju was seriously injured when the pachyderm pierced its ivory into his stomach, the other person ran to safety in time. Thinking that he must be dead, the tusker left the place.
The injured was given first aid at Madikeri hospital and later shifted to a hospital in Mysore where he was operated upon and was now recovering.
Gram Panchayath President Loknath has appealed to the forest department to protect them from elephant menace which had become common in the recent times. The villagers criticised the officials for not taking action even though elephants were destroying their crop and attacking them often.
