Israeli troops kill two Hamas gunmen in Gaza

Gaza, Aug 8: Israeli troops killed two Palestinian gunmen during a gun battle in the southern Gaza Strip today, residents, ambulance workers and army officials said.

An Israeli army spokesman said a force, which was on patrol on the Israeli side of the Gaza border, spotted two armed gunmen on the Gaza side of the fence. The soldiers pursued the two gunmen into Palestinian territory, then shot and killed them.

Local residents and medical staff in Gaza said the two gunmen belonged to Islamist Hamas which took over the coastal enclave from secular Fatah during a brief civil war in June.
