Flood situation improves, toll touches 105

Patna, Aug 08 (UNI) The overall flood situation today improved as water levels of most of the rivers in north Bihar started receding, while the toll figure during the current flood fury has touched 105 so far.

A release of National Disaster Management department said here that more than about 13 million of people had been affected by the flood fury in 19 districts so far, while standing crops in more than 10.91 lakh of hectare damaged.

A report from Samastipur said more than 10 lakh people were affected by devastating flood in the district as the Bagmati and Kareh rivers breached their embankments at several places, inundating 710 villages in eight blocks.

Rosera and Khanpur are among the worst affected blocks of the district, where the flood situation continued to remain grim.

Manager of Samastipur division under East Central Railway V S Hari said today that movement of trains was disrupted on Rosera-Hasanpur section as the tracks on the route were submerged with flood water.

In Supaul, more than 31 panchayats were affected by flood fury rendering more than two lakh people homeless.

Standing crops in 26,000 hectare of the area were damaged by the flood water.

A report from Darbhanga said the flood situation had improved as water level in the Kamla Balan was fast receding.

Several villages, which were earlier indundated by the flood water, were now free from inundation as people were returning to their houses.

In Muzaffarpur, the Burhi Gandak and the Bagmati rivers were maintaining receding trend and as such the overall flood situation in the district had improved.

A report from Khagaria said district collectorate, civil court and other government offices were inundated by flood water affecting the workings.

The traffic movement on Khagaria-Rosera remained disrupted as the main road was submerged with flood water.

Meanwhile, Meteorological office sources predicted thundershower in catchment areas of the majority of the rivers in north Bihar.
