Flood situation improves in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur, Aug 8 (UNI) The flood situation has improved in Gorakhpur division in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

A dip of about 5 cms had been recorded in the water level of several rivers of the division, which had been in spate of late.

However, some other rivers, including the turbulent Ghaghra were still flowing above the danger mark. Lakhs of hectares of agricultural land were submerged under water.

District Magistrate Ranjeet Singh Pankaj said the southern areas of Gorakhpur were still reeling under flood fury. The vehicular movement between Gorakhpur-Badhelganj remained disrupted for the fourth consecutive day.

While two people were reported drowned in Gorakhpur, one person died in a rain-related incident in Maharajganj district in the last 24 hours.

''A 25-metre crack in an embankment here has caused breaching of Gandhak river,'' District Magistrate of Kushinagar Amrita Soni said.

Rescue operations in flood-hit villages were on in full-swing.
