Elephants destroy paddy fields

Kohima, Aug 8 (UNI) The people of Pangti Under Wokha district are spending sleepless nights for last two days as a herd of wild elephants entered their village and destroying paddy field.

Official sources said that around 15 number of wild pachyderms entered invaded their village on Sunday evening and started destroying the paddy fields in the Lanke Lani and Osa Lani areas.

"Villagers are spending sleepless nights as they are busy chasing the elephants from the paddy fields and to save the lives and property of their family members, " official sources said.

The villagers alleged that despite of information, the forest department officials were not taking any step to chase away the elephants. In 2004, a herd of elephants killed one person in the village and injured another four persons.
